In the summer, in the fall
my window was full of liquid amber
lit with starry leaves
green
One chilly day in mid-September
the colors came
touched their curling tips with flame
Every day brought wild changes
gold to rose to scarlet, russet
rosewood, bronze, burgundy
Cardinal, carmine, crimson
vermillion
When they began to fall
(cardinal, carmine)
I didn't mind
those left behind
the purplest of all
were the last to fall
Now only a few leaves haven't left
Soon I could count each one
Soon there will be none
But yellow spiny capsules full of seeds
tiny capsules full of seeds
are popping out by the thousand
