Do you ever get a crush on a song?
For about a week I have been at the piano obsessively playing Chopin's Waltz in Ab Major, opus 69 no. 1.
I've also been thinking about trying to make a vocal melody that is a little more meandering,
that maybe does not fit so tidily into a compact verse, and using lyrics that are a little more abstract.
But I wanted to find the right support.
I was unsure about adding my own words & vocals to an exisiting piece of music,
but the '70s pop song "Could It Be Magic" was based on a Chopin Prelude,
and there is no finer example of enduring good taste than Barry Manilow.
right?
ummm.....
Anyway. So I decided to use this Chopin waltz just because it was on my mind.
Then after I finished recording everything I did a little research and discovered
that this particular waltz is often called L'adieu, or the Farewell Waltz.
It was written in 1835 and dedicated to Marie Wodzinska,
who was engaged to marry Frederic Chopin, but broke off the engagement.
A technical note: I recorded this in my apartment next to a window which is just above a bus stop.
So
if you are sensitive to very high frequencies, or there is a dog nearby,
I apologize. The brakes on the #33 are a little piercing sometimes.
